Your choice of smartphone says a lot about you

Recent research from psychologists at Lancaster University noted that Android users are more honest than iPhone users which connect personality with the type of smartphone being used for the first time.

The results show that four out of five UK adults acquire a smartphone at some point in their lives, with the market split nearly half-half between Android users and iPhone users.

It has been pointed out previously that smartphones are now so interconnected with our personalities that they have become an extension of us.

Not only are smartphones personalized towards out preferences, but the type of smartphone we use also manifests clues about who we are.

Questionnaires about the participants and their attitudes towards their smartphones were given by the researchers to over 500 participants in this research.

The result of comparing both Android and iPhone users revealed that iPhone users are more likely to be younger, extravert, and are twice as likely to be women, they are also more likely to view their phone as a status object and less concerned about having devices favored by the majority of people.

On the other hand, Android users are more likely to be older, male, honest, agreeable, less likely to break rules for personal gain, and are not as interested in wealth and status.

Dr David Ellis from Lancaster University commented: “In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that an individual’s choice of smartphone operating system can provide useful clues when it comes to predicting their personality and other individual characteristics.”

In the second stage of the research, the psychologists were able to build up a computer program that could forecast the type of smartphone a person held depending on differences between the users of both devices.

Co-lead of Dr David Ellis, Heather Shaw, from the University of Lincoln said: “It is becoming more and more apparent that smartphones are becoming a mini digital version of the user, and many of us don’t like it when other people attempt to use our phones because it can reveal so much about us.”
